The Improbable story behind Slue-foot Sue – from the Walt Disney Archives
Ever wonder why coyotes howl at the moon? The answer lies with Slue Foot Sue, one of the few females to grace the great American tall tales. This “female buckaroo” rode a giant catfish straight into Pecos Bill’s heart in Walt Disney’s 1948 MELODY TIME. Enraptured, Pecos promised the feisty red-head a wedding day ride on his horse, Widowmaker, but once astride the bucking bronco, her springy bustle bounced Sue so high “the unfortunate maid finally come to the moon and that’s where she stayed”. So every night poor Pecos looked upand “raised his voice in mournful cry”. The sympathetic coyotes joined in – and to this day they still cry at the moon. The 2nd sculpture in the American Folk Heroes series, Slue foor Sue is depicted as Pecos Bill first spotted her, “lookin’ like something out of a dream”.
This special, large figurine captures the character from the story of Slue Foot Sue from Walt Disney’s 1948 cartoon entitled “Melody Time”. It is the second edition in the WDCC American Folk Heroes collection. It follows Pecos Bill and Widowmaker and is followed by Casey at the Bat (both also offered for sale in our other listings). S.F. Sue was offered during only the year of 1995 and then retired. Great detail on this figurine includes: large whiskers on the catfish, blue bows in Sue’s hair, large metal rope lasso. Porcelain waves and splashes where catfish is leaping out of the water. The Issue Price was $695.
